Earlier Report Observations

The Brazilian market for cocoa shells, husks, skins and waste expanded from 52.7 thousand tons in 2018 to 66.2 thousand tons in 2021. This growth was driven by increased cocoa production, supported by agricultural policy subsidies for cocoa farming in the Atlantic Forest and Amazon biomes and the adoption of sustainable cultivation practices such as the cabruca system. The sector's modernization, beginning in 2019 with mechanization and planting in the Cerrado region, aimed to boost productivity, while partnerships like that between Schmidt Agrícola and Cargill introduced new agricultural techniques.

Market volume dipped to 59.2 thousand tons in 2022, influenced by pressure on international cocoa prices due to a low stock-to-grinding ratio—the lowest in 46 years—which reduced demand and grinding activity in Brazil. Tension also arose from imported cocoa arriving without proper phytosanitary inspection. Recovery followed in 2023, with volume reaching 64.8 thousand tons, as high international cocoa prices and reduced global stocks created opportunities for production expansion. This was further supported by a rise in per capita chocolate consumption in Brazil from 3.6 kg to 3.9 kg, boosting domestic cocoa demand.
