Between 2018 and 2020, the market volume for cocoa-free sugar confectionery in Sub-Saharan Africa grew from 526.8 thousand tons to 543.7 thousand tons. This expansion was driven by the emergence of artisanal chocolate producers in Nigeria, which diversified local supply, and a growing middle class with urbanization increasing overall confectionery demand. In 2020, a 38.8% surge in cocoa preparations imports into Nigeria further indicated rising consumer interest in the category.

The market continued to rise in 2021, reaching 556.5 thousand tons, but contracted to 515.2 thousand tons in 2022. Consumption rebounded strongly to 561.0 thousand tons in 2023. This recovery aligned with broader regional trends, including sustained consumer preference for healthier options and the ongoing entry of new local brands, factors that gained prominence as cocoa prices reached record highs in 2024.

Sub-Saharan Africa's cocoa-free sugar confectionery production increased for the second year in a row. In 2020, the region produced 403.0 K t, marking a 5.5% year-over-year improvement. Production hit its lowest point in 2018 at 379.9 K t, which also saw the largest decline of 7.0%.

After two years of decline, Sub-Saharan Africa's cocoa-free sugar confectionery exports rebounded. In 2020, exports reached 22.6 K t, a sharp 27.5% increase from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports fell by 43.5%, with an annualized decline of 17.3%. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 17.7 K t, while the steepest drop occurred in 2018 at 51.8%.

Sub-Saharan Africa's cocoa-free sugar confectionery export value declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports totaled 199.7 M $ US, down 2.8% year-over-year. Between 2017 and 2020, export value decreased by 8.9%, equivalent to an annualized rate of 3.1%. The peak was in 2018 at 223.2 M $ US, with the largest decline of 8.0% in 2019 and the largest increase of 1.8% in 2018.

In 2020, Sub-Saharan Africa's cocoa-free sugar confectionery imports totaled 163.3 K t, a 2.7% decrease from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports fell by 15.1%, with an annualized decline of 5.3%. The largest drop was in 2018 at 13.6%, while the biggest increase occurred in 2019 at 0.9%.

The import market in kind from 2017 to 2020 was diverse, with China (17.4% of imports), India (10.0%), and Turkey (6.7%) collectively making up just 34.1% of total flows. The remaining 65.9% was distributed among numerous other countries.

The lowest value was in 2018 at 307.4 M $ US, which also saw the largest decline of 1.0%. The largest increase was in 2019 at 0.6%.
