The Venezuelan cocoa bean market volume fluctuated between 11 102 t and 19 628 t from 2018 to 2023. Initial challenges in 2018 included delayed export license approvals and government confiscations, which constrained trade. Market volume fell sharply in 2019 to 11 102 t as exports surged to 17 647 t, reducing domestic supply.

After a rebound in 2020, volume dipped again in 2021 with higher exports. In July 2022, the government introduced tax exemptions for cocoa exports and launched the National Cocoa Research, Development, and Innovation Center. These measures supported production growth to 29 325 t and helped increase market volume to 16 999 t that year.

By 2023, market volume rose to 19 628 t as exports declined to 9 783 t. During this period, the National Assembly advanced the Cocoa Law project, which formalizes export tax relief and aims to protect native genetics. By 2024, efforts focused on international promotion through Bancoex and business meetings to access Asian markets.

In 2020, Venezuela produced 27 827 tons of cocoa beans, marking a 3.2% decrease from 2019. Production reached its lowest point in 2018 at 26 879 tons, while 2019 saw the highest output at 28 749 tons. The most significant year-over-year increase occurred in 2019, with production rising by 7.0%.

Cocoa bean production in Venezuela increased for the second consecutive year in 2020, with output valued at 77 405 thousand US dollars, representing a 4.8% advance over the previous year. However, over the 2017-2020 period, production value decreased by 7.7%, translating to a compound annual growth rate of -2.6%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 68 772 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest decline of 18.0%. In contrast, 2019 experienced the biggest increase at 7.4%.

Exports cocoa beans from Venezuela

Exports in kind, t

Following two years of growth, Venezuela's cocoa bean exports declined in 2020, totaling 11 071 tons—a 37.3% drop from the previous year. Despite this recent decrease, exports increased by 40.5% overall between 2017 and 2020, with a compound annual growth rate of 12.0%. The peak export volume was recorded in 2019 at 17 647 tons, which also saw the largest annual increase of 64.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, Japan, Malaysia, and the United States consistently led Venezuela's cocoa bean export destinations by volume. Japan accounted for 30.8% of exports, Malaysia for 16.1%, and the United States for 12.3%. Together, these three countries represented 59.2% of Venezuela's total cocoa bean export flows during this period.

After two consecutive years of growth, Venezuela's cocoa bean exports in value terms fell in 2020 to 30 796 thousand US dollars, a sharp decline of 32.1% compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 span, however, export value increased by 28%, equivalent to an 8.6% annualized growth rate. The highest value was recorded in 2019 at 45 325 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest annual increase of 65.4%.

Throughout 2017-2020, Japan, Malaysia, and the United States dominated Venezuela's cocoa bean exports by value. Japan held a 32.6% share, Malaysia 14.4%, and the United States 10.4%.
