Earlier Report Observations

The cocoa beans market in Southern Asia grew from 30 572 t in 2018 to 38 273 t in 2023. This expansion was supported by steadily rising cocoa bean prices across the region, which reflected strengthening demand and incentivized production. Output remained concentrated in southern Indian states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka, areas recognized for high-quality beans.

A significant market volume increase to 35 241 t in 2021 coincided with global supply constraints that pushed prices higher and encouraged local production. By 2023, severe global shortages due to climate impacts and crop diseases in West Africa drove cocoa prices to historic highs, further motivating output growth in Southern Asia. During this period, the emergence of craft and bean-to-bar chocolate brands in India boosted demand for premium cocoa beans.
