The coal market volume in Bosnia and Herzegovina declined from 15.8 million tons in 2018 to 14.2 million tons in 2021. In 2020, a slight drop in global coal production affected the market, as over 90% of domestically mined coal is used for electricity generation in thermal power plants.

In 2022, the market volume stabilized at 14.1 million tons, but its value surged to $1.5 billion. Record global coal demand, high gas prices after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and sanctions on Russian coal disrupted supply chains and boosted prices, prompting a shift toward cheaper coal. Domestic supply was also affected by production issues in Federation mines, leading to purchases from the Stanari mine.

Regulatory decisions on coal prices and sales conditions for 2024 and 2025 continued to frame the market, while global factors like strong Asian demand and the growth of clean energy technologies indirectly influenced price levels and availability.
