The citrus fruit market in Fiji expanded significantly from 2018 to 2023, with total market volume rising from 3 612 tons to 6 534 tons. This growth was largely driven by a more than doubling of domestic production, which climbed from 1 980 tons to 4 938 tons over the same period.

Market volume growth accelerated notably after 2020, jumping from 4 497 tons that year to over 6 100 tons by 2022. This surge coincided with a major increase in local output, which saw its largest annual gains in 2020 and 2022.

While imports of citrus fruit varied year to year, they trended downward from a high in 2019, indicating the market's increasing dependence on domestic supply. Exports remained negligible, confirming that nearly all local production served the home market.

Fiji's citrus fruit production has increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, Fiji produced 3 131 tonnes of citrus fruit, marking a significant 57.3% increase compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 128.9%, with an average annual growth rate of 31.8%.

The market showed considerable volatility during these years. Export volumes reached their lowest point in 2019 and peaked in 2020, with a 2.1-fold difference between these extremes. In 2020, Fiji exported 13 tonnes of citrus fruit abroad, representing a 107.3% increase from the prior year. The minimum volume was recorded in 2019 at 6 tonnes, while the largest decline occurred in 2019, falling by 35.9%.

From 2017 to 2020, Tuvalu remained the dominant export partner for Fiji's citrus fruit in volume terms, accounting for 79.2% of total flows. Other markets collectively formed a long tail of smaller destinations.

The market exhibited an unstable trend throughout this period. Exports varied significantly, with a low in 2017 and a high in 2020, showing a 2.6-fold difference. In 2020, Fiji exported citrus fruit worth 20 thousand US dollars, a 29.3% increase from the previous year. The largest decline was recorded in 2019 at 16.9%, while the largest increase occurred in 2018, rising by 146.5%.

During 2017–2020, Tuvalu continued to be the main market for Fiji's citrus fruit exports in value terms, holding an 80.0% share of total flows. The remaining volume was fragmented across numerous other destinations.

After two years of growth, Fiji's citrus fruit import volumes declined. In 2020, imports were recorded at 1 378 tonnes, down 23.8% from the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, imports increased by 11.7%, equating to an annualized growth rate of 3.8%. The maximum volume was recorded in 2019 at 1 809 tonnes, and the largest increase occurred in 2018, rising by 33.1%.

From 2017 to 2020, Australia played a leading role in Fiji's citrus fruit imports in volume terms, accounting for 70.4% of total flows. The remainder was distributed across other trading partners.
