Earlier Report Observations

The Spanish market for cigars, cheroots, cigarillos and cigarettes, measured in value, contracted from 1 737 M $ in 2018 to 1 436 M $ by 2020. Domestic production also fell over this period, from 265 M $ to 241 M $, while imports dropped from 1 632 M $ to 1 344 M $. Exports saw a slight decrease, contributing to the overall market decline.

After 2020, import values fluctuated, rising to 1 444 M $ in 2021 before dipping to 1 393 M $ in 2022 and climbing again to 1 564 M $ in 2023, then falling sharply to 1 148 M $ in 2024. Exports steadily increased, reaching 283 M $ in 2023 and 2024. In 2022, market sources reported a 6.1% increase in tobacco sales, driven by higher volumes of cigarettes and roll-your-own tobacco, even as pipe tobacco and cigar consumption declined.

This sales growth coincided with heightened consumer awareness of health risks, which spurred interest in alternative products like e-cigarettes and vaping devices. Brand leadership remained stable, with Marlboro and Camel holding the top market shares for cigarettes.
