Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2023, the chicken meat and offal market in Tuvalu contracted from 757 t to 488 t. This decline of over 35% was primarily driven by a sharp reduction in imports, which fell from 698 t to 425 t, while domestic production saw a modest increase from 58.8 t to 63 t.

In 2024, imports decreased further to 315 t. This continued downturn coincided with the global H5N1 avian influenza outbreak in North America, which disrupted worldwide poultry supply chains, and a rise in international poultry prices of about one-third since 2021, increasing costs for imported chicken meat.
