The volume of the chicken meat and offal market in The Gambia increased substantially from 22 thousand tons in 2018 to 48 thousand tons in 2023, with a particularly sharp rise occurring after 2021. This expansion was primarily driven by a more than doubling of import volumes over the period. Throughout these years, the market operated under an official ban on the import of frozen chicken legs, a policy established in 2013 to promote food self-sufficiency and support local agricultural production.

Despite the import restrictions targeting frozen chicken parts, total chicken meat imports continued to climb, while domestic production remained relatively stable at around 1.1–1.2 thousand tons annually. The strengthening of policies to limit frozen chicken imports in 2021 and 2022 did not curb the overall growth in import volumes, suggesting a market shift towards other forms of chicken meat not covered by the specific ban.

By 2023, the market volume reached 48 thousand tons, and import trends indicated continued growth into 2024, highlighting the country's sustained reliance on imports to meet chicken meat demand.

In 2019, imports peaked at 24 371 tonnes, but by 2020 they had dropped to 23 986 tonnes, marking a slight decline of 1.6%. Between 2017 and 2020, imports increased by 45.6%, which translates to an annualized growth rate of 13.3%. The largest increase occurred in 2018, with a 26.0% rise.

From 2017 to 2020, the United States, the Netherlands, and Ukraine were the main sources of imports in kind. The United States accounted for 56.6% of imports, the Netherlands for 18.3%, and Ukraine for 10.7%. Together, these three countries made up 85.6% of total import flows.

Following two years of growth, the import value of chicken meat and offal into Gambia declined. In 2019, imports reached their highest point at 8 551 thousand US dollars, but by 2020 they had fallen to 7 969 thousand US dollars, a decline of 6.8%. Between 2017 and 2020, imports increased by 20.6%, corresponding to an annualized growth rate of 6.4%. The largest increase was recorded in 2018, with a 21.6% rise.
