This trend reversed in 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic led to a contraction to 10.0 million tonnes, as lockdowns paralyzed construction sites and disrupted supply chains.

Government stimulus plans and a recovery in residential and infrastructure demand drove a sharp rebound in 2021, pushing market volume to 14.3 million tonnes. The following two years saw a decline to 13.3 million tonnes in 2022 and 12.6 million tonnes in 2023, influenced by persistent global supply-chain tensions, rising energy and raw material costs, and Spain's strong export orientation for these products.

In 2024, the market expanded again to 14.8 million tonnes, buoyed by continued infrastructure investment, urbanization, and the industry's shift toward greener production technologies in response to environmental regulations.

The most significant year-on-year increase occurred in 2018, with a rise of 24.2%.

In 2020, export volume stood at 601.2 thousand tonnes, showing a modest 5.1% decrease from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports increased by 4%, equating to an annualized growth rate of 1.3%. The most significant increase occurred in 2018, with a 57.3% rise.
