Earlier Report Observations

The market for fresh carrots and turnips in Belize experienced significant shifts between 2018 and 2023. After growing to 976 t in 2019, total consumption dipped slightly the following year before climbing sharply to a high of 1 186 t in 2021. The market then contracted over the next two years, falling to 947 t by 2023.

Domestic production was the primary driver of this volatility. Output more than doubled from 483 t in 2018 to 945 t in 2021, directly fueling the market's peak. This expansion was followed by a steep decline, with production dropping to 402 t in 2023.

Changes in import volumes acted as a counterbalance to production trends. As local output surged through 2021, imports fell steadily from 430 t in 2019 to 150 t in 2022. The subsequent collapse in production in 2023 triggered a rebound in imports to 545 t, which only partially offset the loss in domestic supply.
