Earlier Report Observations
Ethiopian camel meat production rose to a record 47 862 t in 2019, driven by strong export demand from the Gulf and Egypt alongside the entry of private exporters like the Somali Meat Company into regional trade networks. This growth was abruptly reversed in 2020 when output fell to 41 585 t as the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted supply chains through lockdowns and transport restrictions.
The market rebounded to 47 631 t in 2021 following the easing of pandemic restrictions via vaccination drives, which restored domestic trade flows. Production then stabilized around 47 000 t in 2022 and 2023. This plateau coincided with a sharp, sustained contraction in exports due to stricter import licensing in key Middle Eastern markets such as the UAE and Saudi Arabia, compounded by recurrent drought that constrained herd productivity.
Persistent structural challenges shaped the market throughout this period. State-owned abattoirs faced inadequate refrigeration and sanitation infrastructure, limiting expansion into processed meat lines. Regulatory scrutiny also intensified, with new draft guidelines on meat-origin labeling and increased veterinary certification requirements for exports reflecting ongoing efforts to meet international sanitary standards.
