The market expansion coincided with a period of tightening global rice supply, including export restrictions on non-basmati rice from India implemented from 2023. In 2024, logistics disruptions and sustained international demand continued to shape Hong Kong's import-dependent market for broken rice.

In value terms, the market followed a similar trajectory, with the total market value rising to $5.9 million in 2023, reflecting both higher physical volumes and increased global rice prices during this period.

Between 2017 and 2020, import value rose by 19.5%, equivalent to an average annual growth rate of 6.1%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 2 291 thousand US dollars, when imports fell by 6.5%.
