Earlier Report Observations

The market volume for bran and residues from cereal and legume processing in Eswatini fluctuated between 2018 and 2023. After remaining around 12 900 tonnes in 2018 and 2019, it fell sharply to 11 666 tonnes in 2020 and further to 10 824 tonnes in 2021. By 2023, however, the market had recovered to 12 782 tonnes.

During the contraction phase, imports dropped from 4 468 tonnes in 2018 to 2 552 tonnes in 2021, while exports rose from 363 tonnes to 1 113 tonnes over the same period. Domestic production increased gradually but could not compensate for the net withdrawal of material from the domestic market.

The rebound from 2022 was supported by a resurgence in imports, which reached 4 599 tonnes in 2023, and a rise in production to 9 945 tonnes. Although exports also grew, the net effect was an expansion of domestic market volume back to near pre-2020 levels.
