Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2020, the market volume for paper bobbins and spools in Bulgaria declined from 6 915 t to 6 451 t. In value terms, the market peaked at 6 073 thousand $ US in 2019 before falling to 5 197 thousand $ US in 2020. Domestic production followed a similar pattern, dropping in 2019 and partially recovering the following year.

From 2021 onward, import and export flows showed significant shifts. Import volume reached a high of 2 888 t in 2022, coinciding with a sharp increase in global paper prices and supply chain disruptions exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine, which raised input costs and affected the European paper market. The following year, the closure of a major paper recycling plant in Pazardzhik disrupted the domestic supply of raw materials, a factor linked to the subsequent decrease in import volume to 2 716 t in 2023. Market consolidation continued in 2024 with the acquisition of a key local trader, Europapir Bulgaria, by a large European player, as import volume recovered to 2 861 t.
