The Spanish market for bituminous mixtures grew to 8 375 thousand tons in 2019, a year marked by a significant decline in export volumes which increased product availability domestically. This expansion was reversed in 2020 when the market contracted to 7 147 thousand tons.

A strong recovery followed in 2021, driving the market volume to a peak of 9 993 thousand tons. The market then corrected in 2022, falling to 8 953 thousand tons, a period where industry estimates pointed to a nearly 10% drop in production compounded by a long-term reduction in the number of bitumen suppliers affecting sector capacity.

By 2024, the market volume had increased again to 9 519 thousand tons. This growth aligned with a change in public procurement for road works, which began favoring innovation through tender processes, and a rising demand for sustainable bituminous mixtures like bio-asphalt and polymer-modified binders, spurred by environmental focus and new product declarations.

Production increased by 11.7% between 2017 and 2020, which translates to an annualized growth rate of 3.8%. The peak value was recorded in 2019 at 598.6 million US dollars, while the largest annual increase occurred in 2018 at 36.2%.

Following two years of gains, Spain's production of bituminous mixtures in volume terms declined. In 2020, the country produced 7 297 thousand tonnes, down by 14.4% from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production increased by 3.4%, with a compound annual growth rate of 1.1%. The highest volume was recorded in 2019 at 8 528 thousand tonnes, and the largest annual increase took place in 2018 at 10.2%.

Spain's exports of bituminous mixtures declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, export volume stood at 151.9 thousand tonnes, marking a 2.6% decrease year-over-year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports fell by 33.7%, equating to an annualized decline of 12.8%. The peak volume was recorded in 2018 at 273.9 thousand tonnes. The largest annual decrease occurred in 2019 at 43.1%, while the largest increase was in 2018 at 19.4%.

In 2020, exports totaled 49.4 million US dollars, showing a significant drop of 12.5% compared to the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports decreased by 23%, which corresponds to an annualized decline of 8.4%. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 104.5 million US dollars. The largest annual decrease occurred in 2019 at 46.0%, while the largest increase was in 2018 at 62.7%.
