The volume of the BEV passenger vehicles market in Hungary grew from 2 306 units in 2018 to 3 969 units in 2020. This expansion was primarily driven by the government's Jedlik Plan, introduced in late 2016, which provided purchase subsidies of up to 1.5 million forints per vehicle, significantly boosting new BEV registrations. The development of charging infrastructure and the entry of specialized battery component suppliers, such as the South Korean firms Toray and Iljin Materials, further supported the market's growth during this period.

From 2021 onward, Hungary's BEV sector saw a sharp rise in both imports and exports, with imports increasing from 5 797 units in 2021 to 29 781 units in 2025 and exports soaring from 3 002 to 48 463 units over the same span. This trajectory was shaped by major industrial investments, including BMW's announcement of an electric vehicle plant in Debrecen set to open in 2025, CATL constructing a battery assembly facility nearby, and LG Magna e-Powertrain planning a component plant in Miskolc for 2026. Government policy evolved, with personal purchase subsidies ending in November 2022, replaced by a new 'climate premium' for commercial electric light trucks from February 2024. By 2023, the total BEV fleet exceeded 45 000 units, with Tesla capturing nearly 31% of the market in early 2024.

In 2021, exports amounted to 113.9 million US dollars, showing a steep rise of 366.4% compared to the previous year.
