Earlier Report Observations

The market for beef, sheep, and goat fat in Kyrgyzstan grew from 6 420 t in 2018 to 7 886 t in 2023, a 22.8% increase over the period. This expansion was underpinned by a rising livestock population, which provided the essential raw material for fat production. In 2018, the government allocated 60 million som to improve cattle quality, signaling early support for the sector. Continued growth in cattle numbers, reaching 1.783 million head by 2022, sustained production capacity throughout most of this timeframe.

Market volume peaked at 7 798 t in 2021 before declining to 7 480 t in 2022. This contraction coincided with a specific decrease in the national sheep and goat herd by 77 100 head that year, reducing the raw material base for a portion of the fat market. Recovery followed in 2023, with the market reaching a new high of 7 886 t, supported by ongoing cattle herd growth and a 10.6% increase in poultry numbers, which diversified potential fat sources.

Livestock census data for 2024 and 2025 indicated a continued upward trend in animal numbers, with cattle herds expanding to 1.859 million head and sheep and goats to 6.33 million head. Furthermore, enhanced phytosanitary controls were implemented, leading to the rejection and return of 562.5 t of non-compliant shipments, reflecting increased quality oversight in the animal product supply chain.
