Earlier Report Observations

The market for beef, sheep, and goat fat in Burundi expanded from 740 tonnes in 2018 to 795 tonnes in 2019. This growth was supported by the 2018 law on permanent stabling of domestic animals, which aimed to improve herd management and productivity for cattle, sheep, and goats. Additionally, the establishment of the Ministry of Environment, Agriculture, and Livestock that year provided a coordinated framework to enhance agricultural and livestock output.

Following a sharp contraction to 390 tonnes in 2020, the market recovered to 494 tonnes in 2021. This rebound coincided with the 2021 laws strengthening the regulatory framework for veterinary products and pesticides, as well as ratified funding agreements for sustainable livestock value chain development, which facilitated investment in the sector.

Steady growth continued, with the market reaching 537 tonnes in 2022 and 559 tonnes in 2023. This trend was underpinned by the 2022 operational reinforcement of the veterinary products regulator (ABREVPA), FAO-supported projects to enforce the permanent stabling law, and the launch of a dedicated government program to intensify livestock production starting from the 2024-2025 budget.
