Earlier Report Observations

The beef and buffalo meat market in Southern Europe reached 2 770 thousand tonnes in 2019, up from 2 605 thousand tonnes in 2018. This growth was interrupted in 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted global supply chains and altered consumption, causing the market volume to drop to 2 565 thousand tonnes.

A sharp recovery followed in 2021, with the market volume surging to 3 154 thousand tonnes. This rebound was driven by the post-pandemic normalization of operations, including a 3.2% increase in domestic beef supply in Italy and record production in major exporting nations like Brazil, which improved overall availability.

From 2022, the market contracted, falling to 2 704 thousand tonnes by 2023. Soaring animal feed costs pressured producers, leading to lighter carcass weights and contributing to lower consumption. During this period, consumer preferences also began to shift towards certified and sustainably produced beef, adding a new layer to market dynamics.
