The beef and buffalo meat market in Macao showed considerable volatility in volume between 2018 and 2023. Starting at 7,607 t in 2018, consumption surged by 29% to 9,818 t the following year. This was followed by a sharp 40% contraction in 2020, bringing the market down to 5,848 t. A partial recovery of 15% occurred in 2021, but volume dipped again by 10% in 2022 before a strong 57% rebound in 2023 lifted the market to 9,497 t, its highest point in the recorded period.

In 2024, several notable developments took place in the sector. Twenty-four local SMEs showcased 'Made in Macao' beef and buffalo meat products at a major international food exhibition, introducing them into large local supermarkets. New domestic manufacturers, such as Macau Ideas with its beef meatballs, entered the local market. A cooperation agreement implemented from 2024 streamlined customs clearance and inspection for about ten types of Macao meat products exported to mainland China. Furthermore, the historic Red Market, a key venue for fresh meat retail, reopened after renovation works and previous pandemic-related closures.
