The domestic market for fresh aubergines in Costa Rica expanded from 86 444 kg in 2018 to over 98 000 kg by 2022. This growth was initially driven in 2019 by a sharp drop in exports, which fell from 11 396 kg to 3 076 kg, as vegetable tariffs made sales to key markets like Ecuador less competitive. The following year, a structural increase in consumer demand for aubergines, spurred by their use in ingredient kits and a growing reputation as a healthy, versatile food, supported further market growth.

After reaching a peak of 98 049 kg in 2022, the market contracted by 4% to 94 127 kg in 2023. This downturn coincided with challenges reported in the Costa Rican food industry, including a decline in consumer purchasing power, which dampened consumption of fresh horticultural products like aubergines.

Costa Rica's aubergine production increased for two consecutive years before declining. In 2019, production reached its peak at 99 330 kg. However, in 2020, it fell to 97 680 kg, marking a 1.7% decrease from the previous year. The most significant growth occurred in 2018, with a 2.0% increase.

Exports aubergines from Costa Rica

The market exhibited volatility during the observed period. In 2018, exports peaked at 11 396 kg, but by 2020, they had dropped to their lowest point of 859 kg, resulting in a 13.3-fold difference between these years. Compared to 2019, the 2020 figure represents a sharp decline of 72.1%. The largest decrease was recorded in 2019 at 73.0%, while the most substantial increase occurred in 2018, rising by 56.4%.

From 2017 to 2020, Nicaragua, France, and Italy were the primary destinations for Costa Rica's aubergine exports in kind. Nicaragua accounted for 64.0% of exports, France for 13.9%, and Italy for 11.8%. Together, these three countries represented 89.7% of total export flows.

Exports in value, $ US

The data shows irregular fluctuations, pointing to a volatile market environment. Exports in value terms reached their highest point in 2018 at 9 251 US dollars, but fell to their lowest in 2020 at 923 US dollars, creating a tenfold gap. This 2020 figure reflects a significant 52.0% drop from the previous year. The largest decline was in 2019 at 79.2%, while the biggest increase was in 2018, rising by 22.0%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Nicaragua, France, and Italy were the main destinations for Costa Rica's aubergine exports in value terms. Nicaragua held a 56.8% share, France 18.0%, and Italy 13.3%. Collectively, these three partners accounted for 88.1% of total export value.
