The volume of the fresh asparagus market in Spain contracted from 57 448 t in 2018 to 39 171 t in 2023, with a particularly sharp drop in 2022. Production followed a similar downward trend, falling from 68 400 t to 44 140 t over the same period, stabilizing in 2023 after the steep decline the previous year.

Production rebounded in 2020, supported by the socioeconomic importance of the asparagus sector in Andalusia as a key driver and a global production increase. However, logistical difficulties such as labor shortages and lack of packaging materials constrained output and international trade in 2023, while droughts and climatic anomalies led to price spikes of up to 40% in key export markets.

Spain consolidated its role as a leading supplier of fresh asparagus to European markets, leveraging high-quality production from regions like Andalusia and Castilla-La Mancha and modern logistics infrastructure to reach Germany and France. Adverse weather conditions and supply chain challenges, however, continued to affect production and commercialization through 2024.

The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 58,610 tonnes, while the highest was in 2018 at 68,400 tonnes. The most significant decline occurred in 2019, with a drop of 14.3%.
