Earlier Report Observations

South African apple production increased from 844 thousand tons in 2018 to 1 215 thousand tons in 2023. This growth was driven by the adoption of higher-density planting systems and new rootstocks, which raised yields, and the introduction of new apple varieties developed by the Agricultural Research Council for warmer conditions, reducing climatic risks. Exports expanded from 407 thousand tons to 506 thousand tons over the period as the industry shifted focus from traditional European markets to Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, with new outlets opening in China and the Philippines in 2021 and exports to Thailand resuming in 2023.

The domestic market volume fluctuated, reaching 801 thousand tons in 2023, supported by cold storage facilities that enabled year-round supply and reduced price variability. Market value grew steadily from 1 003 million US dollars to 1 330 million US dollars, reflecting the value added by modern storage techniques that allow apples to be kept for up to 12 months without quality loss, alongside continuous export diversification and supply chain efficiencies.
