Earlier Report Observations

The market volume for alliaceous vegetables in Oman peaked at 129.3 thousand tons in 2020 before declining to 80.1 thousand tons by 2023. This overall decrease was driven by a sharp contraction in imports, which fell from 118.1 thousand tons in 2019 to 56.0 thousand tons in 2023. Meanwhile, domestic production demonstrated strong growth, more than doubling from 11.8 thousand tons in 2018 to 24.9 thousand tons in 2023.

The development of the Khazaen Central Market for Vegetables and Fruits (SAL), with financial closure in January 2022 and construction launching in May, established a major logistics hub for wholesale trade. This infrastructure project supported the consistent expansion of local production, which increased from 19.2 thousand tons in 2021 to 20.1 thousand tons in 2022 and further to 24.9 thousand tons in 2023, as improved distribution channels benefited domestic growers.

In 2024, import volumes rebounded to 120.8 thousand tons as new regulations took effect. Ministerial Decision No. 69/2024 introduced food registration and advertising rules under the Food Safety Law, while the Omani Standards Authority issued a manual setting general requirements for fresh produce. Concurrently, consumer preferences shifted toward fresh and healthy products, supporting demand.
