Alliaceous vegetables market in Colombia

The market for alliaceous vegetables in Colombia reached 940 thousand tons in 2018, partly driven by retail investments in fresh produce formats like Grupo Éxito's Fresh Market, which focused on locally grown organic vegetables. However, over the next two years, market volume contracted sharply, falling to 700 thousand tons in 2020.

From 2021 onward, the market began to recover, reaching 758 thousand tons in 2022. This recovery coincided with updated regulations for exporting fresh vegetables, facilitating international trade, and increasing consumer awareness of healthy eating. In 2023, the market stabilized at 750 thousand tons.

In 2024, imports of alliaceous vegetables rose to 109 thousand tons, indicating sustained demand. This period saw the influence of climatic events like El Niño on production, as well as the growth of the organic segment and strengthened retail networks for fresh produce.

Colombia's production of alliaceous vegetables declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 626.1 K t, marking a significant 24.0% decrease compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, production fell by 23.8%, which translates to an annualized decline of 8.7%. The peak production was recorded in 2018 at 880.6 K t, with the largest increase of 7.1% also occurring that year.

Over the 2017-2020 period, exports decreased by 12.6%, with a compound annual growth rate of -4.4%. The highest export volume was in 2019 at 1 240 t, while the largest increase of 32.9% was recorded in 2018.
