Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2021, the Italian agglomerated cork market experienced significant fluctuations. Amorim Cork Italia's launch of new technical closures Sparkpür 01 and 02, specifically designed for Prosecco DOC and DOCG wines, stimulated cork demand in 2018-2019, contributing to market volume growth to 35.3 thousand tons in 2019. However, in 2020, physical market volume contracted to 31.2 thousand tons, while value increased to $311.9 million USD, reflecting a shift toward higher-value products. By 2021, Amorim's investments in corporate welfare and certifications such as Family Audit supported a recovery in market volume to 35.8 thousand tons.

After 2021, the market began to decline, with volume dropping to 28.5 thousand tons in 2023. Italian production fell from 24.8 thousand tons in 2019 to 12.5 thousand tons in 2023, while imports peaked at 21.2 thousand tons in 2022 before decreasing. Technological advancements, such as advanced machinery for cork plants from Italian manufacturers including Meacci, helped maintain product quality, but overall market volume shrank due to reduced domestic production and import changes.
