Between 2018 and 2021, Hungary's imports of acyclic hydrocarbons declined from 185 thousand tonnes to 109 thousand tonnes. This trend aligned with the country's strengthening energy independence policy, which included a 7.3% increase in domestic natural gas production in 2021 and the centralization of energy oversight under the Ministry for Innovation and Technology.

The award of six new hydrocarbon concessions to companies like MOL in 2022 marked a direct push to boost local output. Domestic production responded, rising from 241 thousand tonnes in 2022 to 302 thousand tonnes in 2024. This increase in supply, supported by the strategic shift away from Russian hydrocarbons, drove the total market volume from 199 thousand tonnes to 240 thousand tonnes over the same three-year period.

Regulatory developments, including the formation of a dedicated Ministry of Energy in 2022 and the launch of a National Hydrogen Strategy, further solidified the framework for long-term energy infrastructure investment, contributing to the market's expansion.

Hungary's exports of acyclic hydrocarbons reached 207.3 thousand tons in 2021, showing a modest increase of 3.7% compared to the previous year. The highest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 229.9 thousand tons, while the lowest was in 2020 at 200.0 thousand tons. The most significant decline occurred in 2020, with a drop of 13.0%. Over the period from 2018 to 2021, exports decreased by 7.1%, which translates to an average annual decline of 2.4%.

From 2018 to 2021, Slovakia, Poland, and Germany were the top buyers of acyclic hydrocarbons from Hungary. Slovakia accounted for 46.2% of exports in volume, Poland for 22.5%, and Germany for 11.4%. Together, these three countries represented 80.1% of Hungary's total exports in this category.

After two years of decline, Hungary's exports of acyclic hydrocarbons in value terms rebounded in 2021, reaching 225.1 million US dollars, a sharp increase of 68.9% from the previous year. The lowest value was recorded in 2020 at 133.3 million US dollars, with the largest decline that year at 33.0%. Overall, from 2018 to 2021, exports decreased by 3.3%, averaging an annual decline of 1.1%.

Between 2018 and 2021, Slovakia, Poland, and Germany dominated Hungary's acyclic hydrocarbon exports in value terms. Slovakia held a 49.6% share, Poland 21.2%, and Germany 11.8%. Combined, these three countries made up 82.7% of the total export value.

Hungary's imports of acyclic hydrocarbons declined for the third consecutive year in 2021, totaling 108.5 thousand tons, an 8.0% decrease from the previous year. From 2018 to 2021, imports fell by 41.5%, with an average annual decline of 16.3%.

From 2018 to 2021, Russia, Poland, and Belarus were the leading suppliers of acyclic hydrocarbons to Hungary. Russia accounted for 46.4% of imports in volume, Poland for 24.0%, and Belarus for 18.9%. Together, these three countries supplied 89.3% of Hungary's total imports in this category.

Following a two-year decline, Hungary's imports of acyclic hydrocarbons in value terms increased in 2021, reaching 81.6 million US dollars, a rise of 41.5% compared to 2020. The lowest value was in 2020 at 57.7 million US dollars, with the largest decline that year at 36.8%. Over the period from 2018 to 2021, imports decreased by 27.5%, averaging an annual decline of 10.2%.
