Commercial generation starts in Yokote

The Yokote power plant, a wood-fired biomass facility with generating capacity of 1,980 kW, began commercial operations on June 30. A completion ceremony was held on July 16, marking the formal launch of the project in Yokote, Akita Prefecture.

The plant is part of Yokote-Yuzawa Forest Cycle, a combined wood-pellet and wood-chip manufacturing and biomass power-generation facility. Sanyo Trading, headquartered in Chiyoda, Tokyo, has invested in the operation. The company is led by President Masanobu Shintani.

Sankei and RBB Today reported that the project will use timber produced in Akita Prefecture as fuel. Its stated objective is to establish a locally based resource-circulation system in which regional forest material is processed and consumed for energy close to its source.

Pellet and chip production supports the fuel chain

The integration of pellet and chip manufacturing with electricity generation is central to the project. Biomass plants require a regular supply of fuel with controlled specifications, while forestry operations need dependable buyers for the material they harvest. Bringing processing and generation into the same facility can connect those two requirements directly.

The model also concentrates several stages of the wood-energy chain in the region: sourcing timber, converting it into pellets or chips and using the processed fuel to generate electricity. For forestry companies and wood processors, the plant creates a local outlet linked to a defined generating asset rather than relying solely on distant customers.

The available project information does not specify annual electricity output, fuel consumption, investment cost or the volume of pellets and chips to be manufactured. It also does not provide details about electricity purchasers or potential sales of processed fuel to third parties. Those figures will be important for assessing plant utilisation and the scale of demand created for Akita timber.
