Ukraine's forces posted drone footage of vessels erupting into flames, though Reuters said it could not independently verify the images.
Sea of Azov supply route in the crosshairs
The Sea of Azov is a key supply route for Russian forces in Crimea and other occupied parts of southern Ukraine, gCaptain reported. Kyiv has stepped up attacks on logistics and energy infrastructure in Crimea in recent weeks, contributing to fuel shortages that prompted authorities to declare a state of emergency on the peninsula, described as a critical hub for Russia's war effort.
"Striking the enemy's naval logistics complicates the supply of fuel and ammunition necessary to support the activities of Russian troops, primarily in the temporarily occupied territory of Crimea," Ukraine's drone forces said in a statement cited by Reuters. This week's attacks also included strikes on electrical substations, radar systems and missile installations. Moscow has not publicly commented.
Pressure on tankers carrying Russian oil
Ukraine has long urged its allies to crack down on vessels that circumvent sanctions to transport Russian oil to international markets, gCaptain reported. Kyiv has previously used sea drones to target tankers carrying Russian crude in the Black Sea as part of a broader effort to reduce Moscow's energy revenues.
There has also been a series of unexplained blasts on tankers that had previously called at Russian ports. Ukraine has neither confirmed nor denied involvement, although maritime security sources said they suspect Kyiv was behind the incidents.
A tightening net around the shadow fleet
The strikes come as Europe steps up enforcement against tankers using flags of convenience. In separate Reuters reporting dated July 2, European authorities were said to be taking tougher action against vessels falsely using Cameroon's flag registry to transport Russian oil, including boarding ships at sea.
Russia annexed Crimea in 2014, eight years before launching its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. With Kyiv targeting vessels both at Russian berths and at sea, and regulators tightening flag-state enforcement, operators involved in the Russian oil trade face mounting physical and legal risk.
