UK begins 10-day audit of Ukraine’s beef safety and traceability system

Assessment covers the full production chain

British experts began a 10-day audit of Ukraine’s beef safety and traceability system on September 7, according to Delo.ua, UkrAgroConsult and UA.News. Successful completion of the assessment would allow Ukrainian companies to begin exporting cattle meat to the United Kingdom.

The inspection covers controls throughout the production chain. The British team will examine cattle farming, slaughter, meat processing and the preparation of export documents. This broad scope means the assessment concerns both government supervision and the operating procedures used by businesses seeking access to the UK market.

Traceability will be a central part of the review. Exporting companies must be able to connect the finished product with the animals, facilities and processing stages from which it originated. The audit will also test whether Ukraine’s control system can consistently demonstrate compliance with the importing country’s food-safety requirements.

Veterinary authorities and companies take part

Ukraine is represented during the audit by Volodymyr Kusturov, deputy head of the State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Protection and the country’s chief state veterinary inspector, together with specialists from the service. Employees of its central and territorial bodies, veterinary laboratories and representatives of Ukrainian companies are also involved.

Kusturov said access to the British beef market would create new opportunities for domestic producers. He added that Ukraine’s task is to demonstrate that state controls operate consistently and can guarantee product safety, traceability and conformity with the requirements of the importing country.

The composition of the Ukrainian delegation reflects the chain that exporters would need to manage if the market opens. Producers and processors depend on animal identification and plant-level controls, while laboratories provide testing capacity and veterinary authorities oversee certification. Export documentation is the final link connecting these controls with shipments entering the United Kingdom.

Market access depends on the audit outcome

The review is a market-access step rather than confirmation that commercial shipments have already begun. The supplied reports do not identify approved exporters, expected volumes, potential buyers or a date for the first deliveries. For Ukrainian suppliers, the immediate issue is therefore regulatory readiness: companies must show that their procedures work within a national system accepted by British inspectors. Delo.ua also reported that Georgia had previously opened its market to Ukrainian meat and several related agricultural products, indicating that Ukraine is pursuing additional destinations for its food exports. Access to the United Kingdom would give eligible beef producers and processors another potential sales market, but the commercial impact will depend on the result of the 10-day audit and the exporters subsequently permitted to supply it.
