Turkey to Release Wheat Stocks Through TÜRİB as Bread-Wheat Prices Rise

TMO opens stocks to unrestricted sales

Turkey’s state grain board, Toprak Mahsulleri Ofisi (TMO), will begin selling wheat from its stocks through the Türkiye Ürün İhtisas Borsası (TÜRİB) on September 1, adding supply to the domestic market after a sharp weekly rise in the bread-wheat index.

According to Haberler.com, wheat held by TMO in licensed warehouses will be offered without distinguishing between individuals and organizations. The amount released will be determined daily according to market needs and regional conditions. Sales will start with regions where the harvest has been completed and deliveries to TMO have ended.

TMO said purchases from the 2026 crop were largely complete and the procurement period was close to ending. The board also said it was monitoring domestic and international market developments. It did not disclose the total volume available for sale, a daily release schedule or a target price.

Bread-wheat index gains 4.17%

The decision follows a firm week for Turkish wheat prices. TÜRİB data reported by Karamandan.com show that the bread-wheat index rose 4.17% during August 24-28, advancing from 7,613.88 to 7,931.36. The index was 27.10% higher year on year.

Red bread wheat, second class, the most heavily traded category, opened the week at TRY 16.90 per kilogram. Its weighted average was TRY 16.89 per kilogram on Monday and TRY 17.03 per kilogram on Friday. Across all bread-wheat products, the weekly transaction average was TRY 16.49 per kilogram.

Durum wheat showed a different short-term pattern. Second-class durum, the category with the largest transaction volume, began at TRY 17.20 per kilogram and recorded a weighted average of TRY 17.15 per kilogram on Friday. The weekly average across all durum products was TRY 16.68 per kilogram. The durum index was up 26.62% from a year earlier, while the broader wheat index had gained 24.93%.

Corn weakens as barley index rises

The wider grain market was mixed. Corn began the week at TRY 14.44 per kilogram, with its weighted average declining from TRY 14.37 on Monday to TRY 14.13 on Friday. Its weekly transaction average was TRY 14.32 per kilogram, although the annual increase remained 27.78%.

Barley opened at TRY 13.10 per kilogram and ended Friday with a weighted average of TRY 13.01. Its weekly average was TRY 12.89 per kilogram. Despite those price readings, the barley index increased from 6,645.00 to 6,817.66 during the week and stood 20.09% above its year-earlier level. The overall cereals index recorded annual growth of 24.70%.

Daily volumes will determine market impact

The sales give mills, traders and other buyers access to public wheat inventories at a time when bread wheat is strengthening faster on a weekly basis than the other reported grains. Because TMO has not announced fixed volumes, the immediate effect on physical prices will depend on the quantities offered each day, their location and the grades made available.

The regional sequence also matters. Beginning where harvesting and deliveries have finished limits the risk that state sales compete directly with farmers still marketing the 2026 crop elsewhere. For processors, the program creates an additional procurement channel through electronic warehouse receipts. For producers and stockholders, it introduces public inventory into price formation just after the bread-wheat index’s 4.17% weekly advance.
