Thailand targets 2027 access to Chile for fresh longan and mangosteen
Chile is accelerating its review of import approval for fresh Thai longan and mangosteen, with market opening and initial shipments expected in 2027. Thailand is also examining access requirements for frozen shrimp and dog chews while preparing exporters for Chilean processed-food rules.
Chile advances review of Thai fruit access
Thailand expects to begin exporting fresh longan and mangosteen to Chile in 2027 as the two countries make progress on sanitary and phytosanitary requirements. Chile has said it will accelerate its assessment of import authorization for the two fruits, according to Bangkok Biz News and Siam Rath.
The development followed the sixth meeting of the Thailand-Chile Free Trade Agreement’s Committee on Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures at Chile’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Thai delegation was led by the National Bureau of Agricultural Commodity and Food Standards, known as ACFS. Ravinan Chamchalerm, the agency’s deputy secretary-general, said continued technical discussions and monitoring by both countries had moved the applications forward.
The expected 2027 timetable remains dependent on Chile completing its approval process. The reports did not provide shipment volumes, export values, tariff details or specific treatment protocols. For Thai growers, packers and exporters, the immediate commercial task is therefore to prepare supply chains for compliance rather than assume that unrestricted trade has already begun.
Frozen shrimp and dog chews enter the agenda
Thailand also discussed Chile’s criteria and procedures for importing frozen shrimp and dog chews. These talks are preparatory: Bangkok is gathering the information needed before submitting future market-access requests, rather than announcing that either product has received approval.
Bangkok Biz News said Thailand regards both categories as products with strong domestic production capacity and established safety standards. Access would broaden the range of Thai agricultural and food products under consideration in Chile beyond fresh tropical fruit. Frozen shrimp processors would need clarity on animal-health, food-safety and certification requirements, while dog-chew manufacturers would have to align ingredients, processing and documentation with Chilean rules.
No target date was disclosed for opening the Chilean market to frozen shrimp or dog chews. The absence of a timetable means producers should treat these discussions as an early regulatory step. Importers and distributors in Chile will also need to wait for formal conditions before making supply commitments.
Processed-food cooperation planned for 2027
Thailand and Chile additionally agreed to strengthen cooperation on processed-food import regulations in 2027. Chile is expected to provide Thai government agencies and businesses with information about its requirements and procedures, helping companies plan production and prepare compliant export programs.
This regulatory exchange could matter beyond the four products specifically identified in the talks. Clearer guidance can help processors determine whether factories, labels, certificates and product specifications meet Chilean requirements before commercial negotiations advance. It can also reduce the risk of consignments being delayed or rejected because of incomplete documentation or incompatible standards.
ACFS said it would continue negotiations to open overseas markets for Thai agricultural and food products under the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives’ policy. For longan and mangosteen suppliers, the next decisive milestone is Chile’s final import authorization. For shrimp processors and pet-snack manufacturers, the priority is to turn preliminary discussions into formal applications supported by the required technical evidence.
