Wet-season rainfall hits the 2026 harvest

Robusta coffee production in Temanggung Regency, Central Java, is projected to fall sharply in the 2026 harvest, according to mediaindonesia.com. The Food Security, Agriculture and Fisheries Office (DKPPP) of Temanggung expects output to drop between 40 and 60 percent compared with a normal season.

The main cause is a wet-season drought, an episode of extreme weather in which unusually high rainfall coincided with the coffee flowering phase. The heavy rain caused blossoms to fall before they could set fruit, disrupting fruit formation across the region's plantations.

Sumarno, Head of the Horticulture and Plantation Division at the Temanggung DKPPP, told reporters on Friday that persistent rainfall during flowering was the primary factor behind the failure to form fruit. He added that high humidity has also increased the risk of fungal attack on the coffee plants, compounding the loss of blossoms.

Prices hold steady near last year's level

Despite the threat to volumes, the local office said it hopes farmer incomes can be protected through price stability in the market. The seasonal price increase that typically occurs at the peak of the harvest, in July and August, is expected to provide an economic cushion for growers facing a smaller crop.

Based on current data cited by mediaindonesia.com, the farm-gate price for dry mixed coffee stands at around Rp58,000 per kilogram, while wet coffee is priced at Rp15,500 per kilogram. Those levels are described as relatively stable and similar to last year's harvest season.

The current price remains well below the record high, which previously reached Rp100,000 per kilogram. Local authorities said they continue to monitor field conditions in order to mitigate wider losses for the coffee-farming community in Temanggung.

What it means for the robusta trade

Indonesia is one of the world's largest robusta producers, and Temanggung is a notable robusta-growing district in Central Java. A harvest cut of 40 to 60 percent in a single producing area removes a meaningful volume of beans from the domestic supply chain during the July-August peak.
