Técnicas Reunidas to engineer Spain’s 500 MW Catalina green hydrogen plant
Técnicas Reunidas has secured the engineering work for the first phase of the Catalina green hydrogen project in Andorra, Spain. The initial 500 MW plant is designed to produce more than 50,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen annually and could eventually expand to 2 GW.
Engineering contract covers design, permits and costs
Técnicas Reunidas has been selected to carry out engineering work for the Catalina project, one of Spain’s largest planned green hydrogen developments, according to IndustriAmbiente. The initial 500 MW plant will be located in Andorra, in the province of Teruel, and is designed for subsequent expansion to 2 GW.
The contract includes a study of the plant’s configuration, preparation of the technical documentation required for permits and a complete project cost estimate. These assignments will help define the project before construction and provide the technical and financial basis needed to move the first phase forward.
First production scheduled for 2027
The first phase is expected to enter operation in 2027 and produce more than 50,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually. A 221-kilometre hydrogen pipeline will carry the renewable fuel from Teruel to large industrial consumers along Spain’s Mediterranean coast.
Planned customers include a new green ammonia plant capable of producing up to 247,000 tonnes per year, as well as refineries and companies in the ceramics industry. The project estimates that replacing conventional energy and feedstock at these facilities could prevent close to 400,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually.
Expansion would take Catalina to 2 GW
Catalina is promoted by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners together with Enagás Renovable, Naturgy and Fertiberia. In a second phase, its capacity is planned to rise to 2 GW. IndustriAmbiente reported that this scale would be sufficient to cover approximately 30% of Spain’s current green hydrogen demand, although the article did not provide a timetable for the expansion.
Project director José Gómez-Arroyo said Catalina would support the reduction of emissions from Spanish industry and European energy independence. He also said it would help make Spain’s future hydrogen backbone and international interconnections viable. Gonzalo Pardo, commercial director for Energy and Energy Transition at Técnicas Reunidas, said the award strengthens the company’s commitment to energy transition and decarbonisation. The engineering group has worked for the past three years on projects involving green hydrogen, the circular economy and carbon capture. For industrial users, Catalina’s significance will depend on converting the engineering design into operating capacity and completing the long-distance pipeline needed to connect inland production with Mediterranean demand centres.
