Tajikistan’s potato output rises 6.8% and vegetable production grows 5.3% in H1 2026
Tajikistan produced 286,040 tonnes of potatoes and 1.2815 million tonnes of vegetables in the first half of 2026. Growth in potatoes, vegetables and onions contrasted with sharp declines in fruit, grapes, melons and fodder crops.
Potatoes and vegetables lead production growth
Tajikistan increased its production of potatoes and vegetables in January-June 2026, although output declined across several other crop categories. Interfax, citing the Statistics Agency under the President of Tajikistan, reported that farms of all types produced 286,040 tonnes of potatoes and 1.2815 million tonnes of vegetables during the six-month period.
Compared with the first half of 2025, potato production increased by 6.8%, while vegetable output grew by 5.3%. The figures indicate that the two large food-crop categories expanded at different rates but both added volume to the domestic supply base. Potatoes remain an important staple, while the broader vegetable category represents the largest reported production volume in the agency’s first-half data.
Onion harvest reaches 429,350 tonnes
Onions accounted for 429,350 tonnes of vegetable production and recorded the strongest growth among the expanding categories detailed in the report. Output rose by 9.9% year on year, outpacing the increase in total vegetables and potatoes. The larger onion harvest provides additional supply for domestic wholesalers, processors and retailers during the marketing period.
The Statistics Agency also recorded 565,570 tonnes of melons and gourds. Unlike potatoes, vegetables and onions, however, output in this category fell by 4.3% from the first half of 2025. The divergence shows that higher production was concentrated in selected crops rather than spread evenly across Tajikistan’s horticultural sector.
Fruit and grape volumes contract
Fruit production totaled 258,710 tonnes, down 13.1% year on year. Within that total, farms harvested 25,840 tonnes of apples, a decline of 15.5%, and 119,870 tonnes of apricots, down 28.9%. The fall in apricot production was the steepest percentage contraction among the crop categories specified by Interfax.
Grape output was limited to 2,910 tonnes and declined by 22.2% compared with January-June 2025. These reductions leave producers and buyers with a less favorable first-half supply picture for fruit than for potatoes and vegetables. The data do not specify the reasons for the declines or provide information on farm-gate and wholesale prices.
Mixed harvest shapes domestic food supply
Fodder-crop production reached 443,790 tonnes in feed units, representing a year-on-year decline of 10.7%. Lower fodder availability is relevant beyond crop farming because it forms part of the input base for livestock producers. The first-half balance therefore combines stronger output in several food staples with weaker supplies of fruit, grapes, melons and animal feed.
According to the Statistics Agency, the results demonstrate the continuing importance of crop production in supplying Tajikistan’s domestic agricultural market and strengthening national food security. The 6.8% rise in potatoes, 5.3% increase in vegetables and 9.9% growth in onions support that assessment. At the same time, double-digit declines in fruit, apples, apricots, grapes and fodder crops underline that the improvement was not uniform across the agricultural economy.
