Light-commercial market returns to growth

Sweden registered 3,145 new light-commercial vehicles in August, an increase of 27% from the same month a year earlier, according to Tidningen Proffs. Registrations in the segment were up 20% over the first eight months of the year, extending a recovery after a prolonged contraction.

The rebound follows a period of declining registrations that ran from May 2024 through August 2025. The latest figures indicate that companies have begun increasing investment in vans and other light transport vehicles again. For manufacturers, dealers, fleet operators and leasing companies, the August result provides evidence of renewed demand after more than a year of weakness.

The statistics cover vehicles registered between August 1 and 31. The month had the same number of registration days as August a year earlier. However, registrations are not the same as orders or sales: the underlying transactions normally took place three to six months earlier, meaning the August data largely reflect purchasing decisions made earlier in the year.

Electric vans gain market share

Battery-electric models accounted for 30% of light-commercial registrations in August, almost twice the share recorded in the same month last year. Tidningen Proffs noted that the scale of the percentage increase was partly due to an unusually weak August for electric light-commercial vehicles in the previous year.

Across the first eight months, electric vehicles represented 26% of newly registered light-commercial vehicles, compared with 23% in the corresponding period last year. Jessica Alenius, chief executive of Mobility Sweden, said the combination of a recovering market and a growing electric share showed that both investment and willingness to transition remained present.

The figures strengthen the case for suppliers serving electric commercial fleets, including vehicle manufacturers, charging providers and leasing companies. Nevertheless, the difference between the 30% monthly share and the 26% year-to-date share should be interpreted cautiously. Monthly registrations can move sharply, and a small number of transactions may be carried into the following month when the final days fall on a weekend. Mobility Sweden also reports rounded figures.

Heavy trucks and buses remain weaker

The recovery was not shared evenly across Sweden's commercial-vehicle market. Registrations of heavy trucks fell 7% year on year to 351 units in August. The market was nevertheless close to last year's level over the first eight months, recording only a marginal decline. Electric vehicles made up 13% of heavy-truck registrations during August and one in ten registrations for the year to date. Mobility Sweden described the segment as stabilizing after the pronounced decline in 2025, while warning that the pace of electrification still needs to increase.

The bus market showed a steeper fall. Sweden registered 106 new buses in August, down 59% from a year earlier, while registrations for the first eight months declined 44%. The comparison was affected by strong performance in 2025, when deliveries recovered after earlier supply problems. Public-transport procurement cycles can also cause substantial differences between months and years. Approximately half of the buses registered so far this year were electric. The broader vehicle market was firmer: passenger-car registrations rose 12% to 22,584 in August and were 2% higher over the first eight months, providing additional evidence that the recovery currently extends beyond light-commercial fleets, even as heavy vehicles and buses follow different cycles.
