Spanish supermarkets push extra-virgin olive oil below 4.50 euros a litre

Extra-virgin olive oil is selling below 4.50 euros a litre in several of Spain's largest supermarket chains, with Carrefour at 4.44 euros and Mercadona, Consum and Lupa at 4.45, according to lasprovincias.es. Prices have been falling for several weeks, and bulk three- and five-litre formats work out lower still, at around 4.26 to 4.27 euros a litre.

Spanish supermarkets push extra-virgin olive oil below 4.50 euros a litre

Extra-virgin olive oil prices in Spanish supermarkets have continued to fall, with several of the country's largest chains selling one-litre bottles below 4.50 euros, according to lasprovincias.es. The newspaper reported that prices had been declining for several weeks and that, as of 24 September 2026, offers under that threshold were available across mainstream retail.

Olive oil sits alongside milk and eggs at the core of the Spanish shopping basket, and consumers are highly sensitive to its price. The consumer association FACUA-Consumidores en Accion tracks it daily through its super.FACUA.org site, which monitors the prices of hundreds of food items in six large chains: Alcampo, Carrefour, Dia, Eroski, Hipercor and Mercadona. Prices for Consum and Lupa were taken directly from those retailers' own websites, meaning the comparison rests on two different collection methods.

Shelf prices by chain

  • Carrefour: 4.44 euros a litre (Aceite de Oliva Virgen Extra Carrefour Extra, 1 litre)
  • Mercadona: 4.45 euros (Hacendado extra-virgin olive oil, 1-litre bottle)
  • Consum: 4.45 euros (extra-virgin olive oil, 1-litre bottle)
  • Lupa: 4.45 euros (Alteza extra-virgin olive oil, 1 litre)
  • Eroski: 4.65 euros (Eroski extra-virgin olive oil, 1-litre bottle)
  • Dia: 4.70 euros (La Almazara del Olivar de Dia, 1-litre bottle)
  • Alcampo: 4.94 euros (Alcampo extra-virgin olive oil, 1-litre bottle)
  • Hipercor: 4.95 euros (El Corte Ingles extra-virgin olive oil, 1-litre bottle)

The gap between the cheapest and the most expensive litre bottle on the list is 51 cents, or roughly 11 percent. Own-label lines account for the lowest prices in every case.

Bulk formats sit below the litre bottle

Three- and five-litre containers price lower per litre. Mercadona and Consum both list three litres at 12.80 euros, equivalent to 4.27 euros a litre. Carrefour's five-litre container is 21.32 euros, or 4.26 euros a litre. Dia lists three litres at 13.80 euros, about 4.60 euros a litre, and Eroski at 13.70 euros, about 4.57 euros.

At the upper end, Alcampo's five-litre container is 24.47 euros and Hipercor's 24.25 euros, working out at roughly 4.89 and 4.85 euros a litre. Lupa runs the other way: its three-litre Coosur container costs 14.97 euros, or about 4.99 euros a litre, above the 4.45 euros the same store charges for a litre of Alteza.

Consumption and household spending

Per-capita data provide a reference point for how far prices have moved. According to the 'Alimentacion en Espana' yearbook published by Mercasa, the state-owned agri-food company, each Spaniard consumed 5.6 litres of olive oil last year and spent 44.90 euros on the product. That implies an average of about 8 euros a litre.

The Mercasa figure covers all olive oil rather than extra-virgin alone, so it is not a like-for-like comparison with the shelf prices listed above. It does, however, indicate the scale of the adjustment households are now seeing in a category that consumer groups monitor daily and that carries outsized weight in public perceptions of food inflation.

What the price list does not show

The data published by lasprovincias.es covers retail shelf prices in eight chains and nothing further upstream. It includes no mill-gate or wholesale quotations, no harvest or stock volumes and no trade flows, and the report offers no explanation for the decline beyond noting that it has run for several weeks.

The Carrefour litre price is presented as a special offer rather than a standing reduction, which leaves open whether the current floor near 4.44 euros marks a new base level or a promotional period. For packers and mills supplying Spanish retail, the relevant question is how much of the retail cut is being absorbed upstream, and the published shelf list does not answer it.
