Spain’s used EV sales rise 45% as fuel costs lift demand

Transactions reach 18,677 vehicles

Spain’s market for used battery-electric passenger cars recorded 18,677 transfers during the first six months of 2026, a 45% increase from 12,855 transactions a year earlier. The figures come from the ElectricarVO report prepared by the National Association of Vehicle Sellers and Repairers, GANVAM, and coches.net, according to ABC.

The acceleration was closely linked to fuel costs. Spain’s price for 95-octane petrol reached a record €1.629 per litre in March amid geopolitical instability in the Middle East. In April, demand for used electric cars increased 106.7% year on year, the strongest monthly rise reported for 2026.

Buyer interest rose unevenly across the country. Demand increased by 83.3% in Extremadura, 74.1% in Asturias and 64.5% in Aragon. The Balearic Islands, Cantabria and La Rioja were the only regions identified as recording year-on-year declines.

Prices reverse a 15-month decline

The average asking price of a used electric vehicle reached €31,661 at the end of June, 6% above the previous year. That ended 15 consecutive months of year-on-year price reductions. ABC linked the reversal partly to a growing supply of relatively new, technologically advanced vehicles released by rental fleets and corporate operators.

Regional differences remained wide. Average prices stood at €37,850 in Extremadura and €35,807 in Murcia, while La Rioja was the least expensive region at €26,460. In Madrid, the average asking price climbed 12.35% to €30,309.

Vehicles aged up to three years accounted for more than 55% of all sales, indicating a preference for recent models. The Tesla Model 3 led the market with 1,324 transactions, up 9.6%, and represented more than 7% of used battery-electric sales. The Model Y followed with 676 units, up 106.7%, supported by vehicles returning from rental contracts.

The Renault Zoe registered 624 transfers, followed by the Mercedes-Benz EQA with 617. The Dacia Spring reached 614 transactions and posted the ranking’s fastest growth, at 211.7% year on year.

Charging and affordability constrain expansion

The report’s consumer survey found that 98% of current EV owners would buy another electric vehicle, while 82% had a charging point at home. Among potential buyers, 42% considered the used market their preferred route into electric mobility. Low-emission zones influenced the purchasing decision of 58% of respondents.

Infrastructure and prices nevertheless remain substantial constraints. Seventy percent of users considered public charging in their municipality insufficient. Potential buyers expected to spend an average of €20,415, compared with an average market offering of €30,588—a gap of about €10,000. Meanwhile, 22% were unaware of state support for cleaner vehicles. GANVAM and coches.net called for a national fleet-renewal plan offering direct incentives for used vehicles up to five years old.
