South Korea’s online bakery market nearly doubles as overnight delivery expands
South Korea’s online bakery market grew from 320 billion won in 2021 to 625 billion won last year, according to NewDaily Biz, citing Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation data. The market is expected to reach 710 billion won this year as bakery brands expand overnight delivery and offer premium products online.
Online sales approach twice their 2021 level
South Korea’s online bakery market has expanded rapidly as bread and other baked goods move beyond store-based purchasing and into overnight delivery. The market grew from 320 billion won in 2021 to 625 billion won last year, nearly doubling in four years, NewDaily Biz reported on the 9th, citing data from the Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation, known as aT.
The expansion is expected to continue. According to the same report, the market could reach 710 billion won this year. That would represent another substantial increase from last year and would put online channels at the center of competition for bakery companies seeking additional sales beyond their physical stores.
Overnight delivery changes the bakery channel
Bread has traditionally been treated as a product purchased directly from a bakery or retail outlet, where customers can assess freshness and consume it soon after production. Overnight delivery is changing that pattern by allowing orders placed online to reach consumers quickly enough to preserve much of the convenience associated with buying from a store.
For bakery companies, faster fulfillment creates an opportunity to serve customers outside the immediate catchment area of individual outlets. It also adds operational requirements. Products must be suitable for transport, packaging must protect quality, and inventory and dispatch schedules must work with the delivery platform’s overnight cycle. The ability to manage those steps will influence which companies can convert growing online demand into repeat purchases.
Premium products move onto digital shelves
Major bakery brands are widening their online ranges to include products classified as premium, according to NewDaily Biz. This indicates that companies are using e-commerce for more than basic, shelf-stable items. Premium products can broaden consumer choice and raise the value of an online order, but their quality and presentation must remain consistent through storage and delivery.
The figures point to a wider competitive field involving bakery producers, retailers and delivery operators. Physical shops remain important for freshness, immediate consumption and brand experience, while online platforms offer reach and purchasing convenience. As the market moves from 625 billion won toward a projected 710 billion won, companies will need to balance product quality with delivery speed and logistics costs. For ingredient suppliers and processors, continued online growth may also change order patterns as bakery manufacturers adapt production volumes and product formats to demand from digital channels.
