Hydrous ethanol records its first monthly increase

Hydrous ethanol prices at mills in São Paulo posted their first monthly increase of Brazil’s 2026/27 season, according to data from the Center for Advanced Studies in Applied Economics, known as Cepea. Forbes Brasil reported that the average price across the full weeks of the month reached R$2.2020 per liter.

The average was 3.11% above the level recorded in July. The movement marks a change in monthly direction after the earlier part of the crop year, although the available figures do not show whether the increase was concentrated in a particular week or sustained evenly throughout the period.

The indicator refers specifically to hydrous ethanol sold by mills in São Paulo. It therefore provides a focused view of pricing in Brazil’s key producing market rather than a complete measure of prices across every producing state, distribution channel or retail market.

Higher prices meet ample cane availability

The increase occurred despite ample sugarcane supply, making the direction of the price movement relevant for mills and buyers. Abundant feedstock availability would ordinarily give producers room to maintain output, but the reported increase shows that the monthly average strengthened rather than declined.

The data alone do not establish whether the gain was driven by changes in production, sales decisions, buyer demand or the timing of transactions. No figures were provided for ethanol output, mill inventories, trading volumes or the allocation of cane between competing products. Those variables will determine whether the increase develops into a firmer pricing phase or remains a single monthly movement.

For producers, the R$2.2020-per-liter average offers an improved price reference compared with July. For distributors and other buyers, the 3.11% rise raises procurement costs at the mill level, although the source material does not provide evidence about how much of that change may pass through to subsequent stages of the market.

Market participants await confirmation

A first monthly gain can influence near-term negotiations because it gives sellers a firmer recent benchmark. However, one monthly comparison is not sufficient to establish a lasting trend. Confirmation would require subsequent readings showing whether mill prices remain above July levels and whether the increase is supported by market volumes.

The distinction between a monthly average and individual weekly prices is also important. Cepea’s reported R$2.2020-per-liter figure represents the average of the month’s full weeks, smoothing shorter fluctuations that buyers or sellers may have encountered in specific transactions.

For ethanol producers, traders and investors, the next readings will indicate whether São Paulo’s market has reached a more stable floor despite ample cane supply. If the increase persists, mills would gain greater pricing support during the 2026/27 season. If it fades, the 3.11% advance will instead represent a temporary interruption in the crop year’s earlier direction.
