San Luis Potosí fruit exports to US extend beyond avocado
San Luis Potosí exported $1.68 million of fresh melons, watermelons and papayas to the United States between January and May 2026. Frozen fruit, watermelon and seasonal berry shipments also make the state’s export basket substantially different from Michoacán’s avocado-focused trade.
A fruit trade distinct from Michoacán avocado
San Luis Potosí recorded $1,678,393 in exports of fresh melons, watermelons and papayas to the United States between January and May 2026, according to data cited by Líder Empresarial. The entire disclosed transaction occurred in April and illustrates how the state’s fruit trade differs from the avocado-centered export industry in Michoacán.
The distinction became more visible after the United States suspended inspections required for avocado exports from Michoacán on August 5, 2026. Reuters attributed the decision to a security alert involving US personnel. The measure was not a general prohibition on Mexican fruit and did not target production in San Luis Potosí.
Inspections partially resumed on August 8 in Tancítaro, Tacámbaro, Uruapan and the Morelia-Pátzcuaro corridor, according to the Association of Avocado Producers and Packers Exporters of Mexico. Public trade records, meanwhile, show that avocado is not currently a significant component of San Luis Potosí’s fruit shipments to the US.
United States takes nearly 92% of disclosed fruit exports
Data México reported a San Luis Potosí avocado transaction worth $83,757 to the United States in 2021, but no disclosed shipment to that market appeared in 2024 or between January and May 2026. The state nevertheless produced 925.78 tonnes of avocado in 2024, according to the Agrifood and Fisheries Information Service.
The April 2026 shipment was classified collectively as fresh melons, watermelons and papayas. The database does not identify how much of its $1,678,393 value came from each fruit. That total was 51.5% above the full-year 2024 value reported under the same customs category, making the lack of a product breakdown particularly relevant for growers, packers and buyers assessing demand.
San Luis Potosí’s disclosed Chapter 08 exports to the United States reached $7,144,013 in 2024. Fruit shipments to all countries totaled $7,775,537, leaving the US with 91.88% of the reported value. Canada ranked second, purchasing $631,524 of frozen fruit.
Frozen fruit and regional production broaden the basket
Fresh produce was not the only important segment. Frozen fruit accounted for 65.4% of the value shipped to the United States in 2024. Historical Data México records also identify recurring fresh watermelon exports, while berries, melons and papayas appeared through seasonal transactions.
Production is distributed across several parts of the state. The Huasteca region supplies much of its citrus, papaya and lychee, while the Zona Media produces watermelon, orange and avocado. In 2024, Tamuín harvested 16,685.5 tonnes of papaya and Ébano produced 10,654.86 tonnes; together, the two municipalities represented virtually all state papaya output. Ciudad Valles produced 46,375.3 tonnes of lemons, nearly the entire state total.
The figures position the United States as the dominant foreign market for San Luis Potosí fruit but do not indicate dependence on avocado. The export base instead rests mainly on frozen fruit, watermelon and seasonal shipments within broader customs categories. For market participants, the main data limitation is product-level visibility: the leading 2026 transaction cannot be divided among melon, watermelon and papaya, complicating assessments of individual crop performance.
