Pharmaceutical production gains more than a quarter

Production of medicines and medical materials in Saint Petersburg increased by more than 25% year on year in January-July, according to regional economic materials from the Bank of Russia reported by Life.ru. The result makes pharmaceuticals one of the sectors showing positive momentum in the city's economy.

The increase covers both pharmaceutical products and medical materials, but the published information does not provide separate growth rates, output volumes or revenue figures for those categories. It therefore establishes the scale of the overall expansion without showing how much came from higher physical production, changes in the product mix or increased prices.

New line adds capacity for tablets and capsules

Growth has coincided with the commissioning of new manufacturing capacity. One large pharmaceutical company opened a packaging line for tablets and capsules and introduced a new vital medicine for the cardiovascular system. The company and the medicine were not identified in the source material, and no capacity figure was disclosed.

The launch indicates that part of the increase is supported by investment in productive assets rather than solely by fuller use of existing facilities. However, the available figures cover only the first seven months and do not show plant utilization, order books or planned output. Those indicators will be important in determining whether the increase represents durable capacity growth.

Saint Petersburg has also completed development of a new gene therapy for patients with severe cancers. Life.ru reported that the first genetically modified product at the Gorbacheva Research Institute of Pediatric Oncology was prepared for production in July. It is intended for patients with lymphomas and leukemias for whom standard therapy no longer works. The project broadens the city's pharmaceutical base beyond conventional dosage forms, although no commercial production volume or launch timetable was reported.

Companies widen their export reach

Foreign sales are expanding alongside domestic production. According to the Saint Petersburg television channel cited by Life.ru, two companies based in the city began selling their products in Asian countries. Another manufacturer widened the export geography of medicines for endocrine diseases and plans to pursue markets in the Middle East, Latin America and Africa. Neither the destination countries nor the value and volume of shipments were disclosed.

The combination of new capacity, product launches and a broader overseas presence is consistent with both import substitution and export-led expansion, but the published evidence does not quantify their respective contributions. The Bank of Russia compiled its regional assessment using official statistics, monitoring data and business estimates. Its August survey covered more than 15,000 enterprises across Russia, including over 400 companies in Saint Petersburg and the Leningrad region. The regulator also uses this information when making decisions on the key interest rate.
