Russian Passenger Car Output Surges as Hyundai, Kia, Nissan and Toyota Expand Local Assembly

Russian factories produced 407,900 passenger cars in the first half of 2026, according to Pravda.ru, exceeding full-year 2025 output by 17%. Growth was led by Hyundai, Kia, Nissan and Toyota, but weak comparison figures and missing sales and inventory data make the durability of the recovery uncertain.

Russian Passenger Car Output Surges as Hyundai, Kia, Nissan and Toyota Expand Local Assembly

Russian passenger car production accelerates

Russian factories produced 77,900 passenger cars in June 2026, up 73.2% from a year earlier and 51% from May, according to Pravda.ru. First-half output reached 407,900 vehicles, 51.3% above the same period of 2025 and 17% more than the 347,800 cars manufactured during all of last year.

The publication attributes the increase primarily to higher local output by global brands. Hyundai production rose 149.4%, Kia 130.5%, Nissan 89.1% and Toyota 62.7%. AvtoVAZ remained the largest manufacturer by volume, but the faster growth of Korean and Japanese brands is reducing its share, as well as that of Chinese producers, in total Russian output.

CKD assembly supports the recovery

Pravda.ru reports that plants including Solters in St Petersburg, Avtotor in Kaliningrad and former Renault facilities in Moscow shifted to assembling Korean and Japanese vehicles from completely knocked-down kits after major original equipment manufacturers left Russia in 2022. The 51% monthly increase in June was presented as evidence of more stable component deliveries and refurbished production lines moving closer to their planned capacity.

Rising imports of components reported by Rosstat also indicate that supply chains serving local assembly have become more active. This remains different from a fully localized manufacturing cycle: new electric-vehicle and hybrid lines rely on imported kits, while Russian production of traction batteries and power electronics is only beginning. Their contribution to first-half output was described as negligible, without a specific volume being disclosed.

Low base limits the signal

The percentage gains are measured against a depressed market. Russia produced 347,800 passenger cars in 2025, a level associated with the early 2000s and less than one-quarter of the 2012 peak of 1.45 million. The current pace, equivalent to approximately 800,000-850,000 vehicles a year, also remains below analysts’ estimate of underlying demand at 1.2 million-1.5 million units.

Automotive expert Igor Morzharetto cautioned that rapid growth from a low base does not by itself establish a sustainable trend. Rosstat’s cited release did not include actual retail sales or dealer inventory, two indicators needed to determine whether higher factory output reflects end-user demand or is increasing unsold stocks.

More choice without guaranteed price relief

For buyers, wider production by established brands could improve model availability, servicing and confidence in residual values. However, Pravda.ru said prices continue to reflect the recycling fee, CKD logistics and exchange-rate risks. High interest rates, expensive component transport and currency uncertainty are also constraining the market.

For manufacturers and component suppliers, the first-half figures show that Russian assembly capacity is returning to operation faster than domestic demand is recovering. Sustained production will therefore depend on retail absorption, financing conditions and reliable access to imported parts. Without stronger sales and inventory data, June’s increase should be treated as a production milestone rather than proof that the market has returned to its previous scale.
