Russian car brands reach 43.3% market share, the highest level in 20 years
Russian brands captured 43.3% of the country’s new passenger-car market in August 2026, their highest share since 2006. Sales reached 48,800 vehicles, led by Lada and the rapidly expanding Tenet brand.
Domestic brands increase their share by 14 percentage points
Russian automotive brands accounted for 43.3% of the country’s new passenger-car market in August 2026, reaching their highest level in 20 years. TASS reported the figures based on data from Gazprombank Autoleasing.
Sales of vehicles carrying Russian brands totaled 48,800 units during the month, an increase of 37% from August 2025. Their market share rose by 14 percentage points over the same period, indicating that domestic marques expanded considerably faster than the wider market segment available to them.
Alexander Kornev, head of importer relations at Gazprombank Autoleasing, said a comparable level was last recorded in 2006. At that time, Lada was selling more than 600,000 vehicles annually, while the large-scale arrival of Western and Japanese foreign cars had yet to begin.
Lada and Tenet account for most sales
Lada remained the largest Russian brand, with 27,100 vehicles sold in August. It was followed by Tenet with 12,200 units, Jeland with 2,400, Evolute with 1,900 and Moskvich with 1,500.
The next five positions were held by Solaris, Esteo, Volga, Umo and UAZ. Solaris sold 1,300 vehicles, although its volume declined by 63%. Esteo recorded 1,000 units, 12 times its July result. Volga sales increased by 40% from July to 608 vehicles, while Umo gained 18% to 360. UAZ sold 208 vehicles, down 53% from August 2025.
The ranking shows that market growth was concentrated among a small number of brands. Lada alone represented more than half of the 48,800 Russian-brand vehicles sold, while Lada and Tenet together generated most of the monthly volume. Smaller marques recorded strong percentage gains in several cases, but their absolute sales remained limited.
New and expanding marques drive rapid growth
Tenet posted the strongest year-on-year movement: its sales increased 277-fold compared with August 2025. Evolute’s volume rose tenfold, while the newer Esteo brand delivered a 12-fold increase from July. Moskvich and Volga also improved from the previous month, by 44% and 40% respectively.
These comparisons reflect both the expansion of established domestic manufacturing and the low starting bases of newer brands. They also show how quickly the composition of Russia’s passenger-car market is changing as locally positioned marques add models and distribution capacity. At the same time, the declines at Solaris and UAZ demonstrate that a rising domestic-brand share is not producing uniform growth for every manufacturer.
Gazprombank Autoleasing forecasts that transactions involving Russian brands could exceed 50,000 vehicles in September. Dvizhok previously reported that Russian marques could overtake Chinese brands by market share before the end of the year. The August result moves them closer to that possibility, although the source provided no September sales figure or full-year forecast.
For manufacturers and component suppliers, the 43.3% share increases the commercial importance of production capacity, localization and stable dealer coverage inside Russia. For importers and dealers, the rapid advance of Russian marques means stronger competition for showroom space and consumer demand, particularly in the high-volume passenger-car categories dominated by Lada and Tenet.
