Romanian farmers seek drought aid as Arad corn losses reach 90%

More than 1,000 farmers in Romania’s Arad County have notified authorities of drought damage, with affected land estimated at about 80,000 hectares. Corn losses have reached 90%, while reported yields are below 1 tonne per hectare compared with 10 tonnes in a good year.

Romanian farmers seek drought aid as Arad corn losses reach 90%

More than 1,000 farmers report damage in Arad

Romanian agricultural authorities have begun collecting compensation claims from farmers whose crops were damaged by severe drought. In Arad County alone, the local Agricultural Directorate had received about 1,103 notifications, its director Adrian Alda told Digi24. Applications submitted by farmers indicate that the affected area in the county covers approximately 80,000 hectares.

The figures point to substantial pressure on one of western Romania’s main farming areas. Corn and sunflower fields have been scorched after plants received too little water to develop normally. Although the available information does not provide a national estimate of damaged acreage or expected compensation, agricultural directorates across Romania are beginning to gather claims, suggesting that the problem extends beyond Arad.

Corn yields fall below 1 tonne per hectare

Corn growers have suffered the heaviest losses, according to Digi24, with 90% of the crop described as damaged. Farmers said they were harvesting less than 1 tonne of corn per hectare, compared with 10 tonnes in a good year. One grower estimated his own output at only 750–800 kilograms per hectare, based on the small quantity of grain produced by each plant.

That yield gap sharply reduces the volume farmers can sell while many production costs have already been incurred. Growers told Digi24 that payments for inputs, seed and other purchases fall due in September and October. With little crop available for sale, compensation could determine whether affected businesses can meet those obligations and finance another planting cycle. The source did not specify the value of claims, the payment rate per hectare or a timetable for a government decision.

Irrigation becomes central to the 2026 outlook

Farmers in Arad are asking the Romanian government for support with irrigation as well as immediate compensation. One producer said the region had endured severe drought for four years, underlining that the current damage is not viewed locally as a single-season event. Repeated moisture shortages can weaken farm balance sheets because producers must continue paying for seed and inputs even when harvested volumes collapse.

The effect on Romania’s 2026 agricultural output will depend on how widespread the losses are outside Arad, the speed and scale of state support, and whether farmers retain enough working capital for the next crop. The reported 80,000 hectares cannot by itself establish a national production forecast, but a 90% loss in corn and yields below 1 tonne per hectare show the severity of conditions in the affected county. For processors and grain traders, reduced local availability may tighten procurement in damaged areas. For producers, the immediate priorities are compensation before major bills mature and investment that reduces exposure to another dry season.
