Romania reports record 2026 wheat, rapeseed and barley harvests
Romania harvested record volumes of wheat, rapeseed and barley in 2026, according to figures attributed to AGRIColumn expert Cezar Gheorghe. Larger supplies are already supporting exports, although the reduced share of milling wheat complicates the outlook.
Three crops reach record volumes
Romania harvested record quantities of wheat, rapeseed and barley in 2026, increasing the volume potentially available to domestic processors and export markets. Stiri pe Surse, citing agrobiznes.ro, reported figures from AGRIColumn expert Cezar Gheorghe of 13.4 million tonnes of wheat, 3.52 million tonnes of rapeseed and 3.4 million tonnes of barley.
All three crops exceeded their 2025 results. Romania produced approximately 13 million tonnes of wheat, 2.8 million tonnes of rapeseed and 3 million tonnes of barley that year. The largest absolute increase among the reported crops was in rapeseed, whose output rose by about 720,000 tonnes.
Weather and acreage support output
The results followed an extended period of favorable moisture. Rainfall began in September 2025, winter brought substantial snow, and rain continued through spring and until around 10 July. Farmers also adjusted after the dry years of 2020-2025 by sowing autumn crops later and expanding wheat, rapeseed and barley acreage. Corn and soybean lost area.
Romania’s corn area fell to approximately 1.6 million hectares, compared with an average of 2.65 million hectares in 2017-2022. The crop remained concentrated on farms with irrigation access, while production is estimated at 7.8-8 million tonnes. That could put Romania ahead of France, where the 2026 corn estimate was reduced to about 7 million tonnes because of drought and high temperatures.
Sunflower acreage moved in the opposite direction, rising to 1.17 million hectares from 1.1 million hectares in the previous season. Production is estimated at 2.6-2.7 million tonnes, adding another sizeable oilseed crop to Romania’s supply base.
Wheat quality limits the headline gain
The wheat record comes with a quality constraint. Only about 58-60% of the 2026 crop is classified as milling wheat, down from 78% in 2025. The remainder is feed wheat. Romania therefore has more wheat overall, but the increase does not translate proportionally into additional supply for flour mills and bakeries. It also leaves traders managing a larger feed-grade volume.
Export movement has already been substantial since the agricultural season began on 1 July. Romania has shipped approximately 2.35 million tonnes of wheat, 1.6 million tonnes of barley and 800,000 tonnes of rapeseed, according to the report. These volumes reinforce the country’s position among the European Union’s leading agricultural suppliers for a second consecutive year.
The larger Romanian harvest arrives as drought and extreme temperatures constrain production elsewhere in Europe. Additional wheat, barley and rapeseed availability can support Black Sea and European supply, but buyers will need to distinguish carefully between milling and feed wheat. For exporters, crop quality and destination requirements will be as important as the record headline volume.
