Romania’s EV Market Cools in August as Active Fleet Reaches 74,541
Romania registered 1,278 electric vehicles in August 2026, giving EVs a 3.24% share of all registrations. The active electric fleet reached an estimated 74,541 vehicles as MG4 led the model ranking and BYD topped monthly brand volumes.
August registrations lose momentum
Romania registered 1,278 electric vehicles in August 2026, marking a visible slowdown after the stronger pace recorded in June and July, according to an analysis by charging-equipment company LEKTRI.CO reported by Economica.net, ZIUA CARGO and Bursa. The monthly total comprised 1,162 electric passenger cars and 116 electric commercial vehicles.
Across all powertrains, 39,406 vehicles were registered nationally during the month. Battery-electric vehicles therefore accounted for 3.24% of Romania’s gross registration market. After 44 electric vehicles were removed from the register, the net increase was 1,234 units. That brought the estimated active electric-vehicle fleet to 74,541 units as of 31 August 2026.
MG4 overtakes Tesla models
The slowdown coincided with a significant reshuffling of the model ranking. MG4 Electric took first place with 79 registrations, ahead of Tesla Model 3 with 70. LEKTRI.CO said the Model 3 result was considerably below its July volume. Tesla Model Y also lost ground, falling to sixth place with 56 registrations.
BYD placed two models among the four most registered vehicles and became the month’s leading brand by gross volume. Sealion 7 ranked third with 63 units, while Dolphin Surf followed with 61. Ford Puma Gen-E rose to fifth place with 58 registrations. Hyundai Kona Electric recorded 43 units, Mercedes-Benz CLA Electric 40 and Mazda 6e 32. Renault 4 E-Tech Electric entered the top 10 in tenth place with 28 registrations.
Established brands still dominate the fleet
The monthly ranking differs substantially from the composition of Romania’s existing electric fleet. Dacia remained the largest brand in operation at the end of August, with 18,626 active electric vehicles and an estimated 24.99% share. Tesla followed with 13,729 vehicles, equivalent to 18.42%.
Volkswagen ranked third with 5,951 vehicles and a 7.98% share, followed by Renault with 5,539 vehicles and 7.43%, and Hyundai with 4,648 vehicles and 6.24%. Mercedes-Benz had 3,306 active vehicles, Ford 2,909, BMW 2,866, BYD 2,126 and Nissan 1,449. The contrast between BYD’s August leadership and its ninth-place position in the active fleet shows how quickly current demand is changing, while Dacia and Tesla retain the advantage of a much larger installed base.
Competition broadens in a small monthly market
Claudiu Suma, CEO of LEKTRI.CO, said the August data showed that Romania’s electric market was no longer led by a single name and that rankings could change from one month to the next. Tesla remains one of the two largest brands in the active fleet, but August demand was spread across Chinese, US, European, Japanese and South Korean manufacturers.
For manufacturers and dealers, the 3.24% monthly share indicates that electric vehicles remain a limited part of Romania’s overall registration market. At the same time, only 23 registrations separated the first- and sixth-ranked models in August. That narrow range gives new models scope to move quickly through the monthly ranking, even as the slower aggregate pace raises competition for each sale.
