Romania’s battery storage reaches 989 MW and 1,975 MWh

Romania had 989 MW of installed battery power and 1,975 MWh of storage capacity on August 1, according to Transelectrica data reported by Economica.net. Capacity has risen by almost 900 MWh in about four months as several large projects entered operation.

Storage capacity approaches 2,000 MWh

Romania’s battery energy storage fleet reached 989 MW of installed power and 1,975 MWh of capacity on August 1, according to the latest data from transmission system operator Transelectrica reported by Economica.net. The figures remain modest relative to the requirements of Romania’s national power system and the storage capacity available in neighboring Bulgaria, but the speed of deployment has accelerated sharply.

At the end of April, Romania had 1,100 MWh of battery capacity. The country therefore added almost 900 MWh in roughly four months, largely through the commissioning of several utility-scale installations. The increase nearly doubled the reported energy capacity and expanded the resources available for balancing variable renewable generation.

Large projects drive the expansion

Recent additions include Hidroelectrica’s first battery, a 72 MWh installation beside the Crucea wind farm, and a 160 MWh facility at Izvoarele in Giurgiu County. The latter was installed next to a solar park by Austria’s LSG, which had previously developed Romania’s first battery capable of providing grid regulation.

A stand-alone project in Iaz village, Obreja municipality, Caraș-Severin County, was completed at the end of May. The facility includes 44 lithium-ion battery containers, 528 high-power inverters, a 110 kV substation, 11 transformer stations and an energy management system. Simtel built the project for Energy Capital Group, part of Turkey’s GÜRİŞ Group. Economica.net described it as the largest operating stand-alone storage unit in the Banat region.

Aukera Energy completed the Gura Ialomiței storage facility in mid-June. A second phase of 100 MW and 200 MWh is expected to enter construction soon and be completed by year-end. Romanian company Electrogrup, part of E-Infra, served as the engineering, procurement and construction contractor for the project.

Florești remains Romania’s largest battery

The country’s largest battery remains Nova Power & Gas’s installation at Florești in Cluj County. The E-INFRA company announced its commercial operation in December 2025. The project has 200 MW of power and 400 MWh of capacity, with 45 battery containers rated at 4.5 MWh each, 30 transformer points and a 110/33 kV substation. It participates in the system-services and balancing markets. The group also operates four other batteries.

Solar output strengthens the business case

Storage is gaining importance as low Danube flows weigh on Romanian hydropower and nuclear generation. The country has more than 3,000 MW of dispatchable solar capacity, which can charge batteries around midday for discharge during the evening demand peak. In February, ANRE Vice President Gabriel Andronache said storage power could rise from almost 600 MW at the end of the previous year to more than 2,000 MW by year-end. He argued that batteries can delay daytime production and reduce the need to export when prices are low and buy or retain electricity when demand and prices are higher.
