Romanian manufacturer joins a regional pharmaceutical group

Poland’s Polpharma Group has completed the acquisition of Romanian drugmaker Biofarm in a transaction valued at €257 million, according to Wall-Street.ro. The deal brings a pharmaceutical manufacturer with more than a century of operating history into one of Central and Eastern Europe’s largest drug-producing groups. The companies expect the integration to support investment, innovation and expansion into additional markets.

Biofarm will continue operating without interruption. Polpharma said the integration would preserve the Romanian company’s relationships with partners, corporate values and local identity. The buyer also plans to combine Biofarm’s domestic market position with the resources and experience of an international pharmaceutical organization.

Two plants and more than 200 products

Founded in 1921, Biofarm operates two production facilities and has a portfolio of more than 200 products across several therapeutic areas. It exports medicines to markets in Europe and Asia. Its manufacturing base, established position in Romania and international sales experience were among the factors supporting the acquisition.

Biofarm General Manager Cătălin Vicol said membership in Polpharma would allow the company to accelerate investment in innovation and pursue new markets with greater confidence. The group expects cooperation between the companies and exchanges of expertise to help introduce Biofarm products to further foreign markets. It also intends to strengthen the position of Polpharma’s own portfolio in Romania.

Polpharma gains a platform in Romania

Polpharma describes Romania as a strategic market for the group and an important country for the future of Central and Eastern Europe. Established in 1935, the Polish company develops prescription medicines, over-the-counter products, active pharmaceutical ingredients and other healthcare solutions. It distributes approximately 400 million packs of medicines each year and is the pharmaceutical market leader in Poland, Wall-Street.ro reported.

The acquisition gives Polpharma an operating platform with local manufacturing, an established product range and existing export channels. For Biofarm, joining a larger regional producer may provide access to development expertise, financial resources and a wider commercial network. The companies have not disclosed specific investment amounts, production targets or a timetable for entering new markets.

Management and integration priorities

Following completion of the transaction, Polpharma Group CEO Sebastian Szymanek and the group’s Central and Eastern Europe General Manager, Tamás Uri, will join Biofarm’s board of directors. Biofarm’s current operations and management structure are expected to support continuity during the integration process.

The immediate industrial significance lies in the combination of Biofarm’s two factories and more than 200 products with Polpharma’s regional scale. The next phase will depend on how quickly the group converts that combination into plant investment, product launches and broader market access. For manufacturers and distributors in Romania, the transaction also adds a larger regional owner to a market where production capacity, portfolio breadth and access to pharmacy and healthcare channels determine competitive reach.
